Os albatrozes são aves magníficas, presentes nos mitos e
no folclore das culturas marítimas de todo o mundo. Na realidade,
eles estão em perigo de extinção, com a maioria das espécies à beira da
extinção.
Nos últimos anos, filhotes de albatrozes mortos foram encontrados em ilhas desabitadas, com seus estômagos cheios de plástico oceânico. Os pais, sem saber, confundiram nosso lixo com comida e alimentaram os filhotes, fazendo com que eles se engasgassem e morressem de fome. Antes mesmo de aprenderem a voar, a poluição humana os matou. No lendário poema de Samuel Coleridge, “A Balada do Velho Marinheiro”, o albatroz representa a beleza e a inocência da criação. No poema, o marinheiro que atira em um albatroz carrega seu cadáver ao redor do pescoço e é assombrado para sempre por suas ações.
É uma grave injustiça que as ações humanas tenham consequências tão terríveis para o mundo natural. Nenhuma criatura deveria pagar um preço tão alto por nossa negligência. Somos coletivamente responsáveis pelo sofrimento dessas criaturas notáveis. Cada um de nós tem um albatroz ao redor do pescoço.

Albatrosses are magnificent birds, alive in the myth and
folklore of seafaring cultures around the world. In reality,
they are endangered, with most species teetering at the
edge of extinction.
In recent years dead albatross chicks have been found on uninhabited islands, their stomachs filled with ocean plastic. Unknowing parent birds have mistaken our waste for their food and fed the juvenile birds, causing them to choke and starve. Even before they have learned to fly, human pollution has killed them. In Samuel Coleridge’s legendary poem ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ the albatross represents the beauty and innocence of creation. In the poem, the sailor who shoots an albatross, bears its corpse around its neck and is forever haunted by his actions.
It is a grave injustice that human actions bear such terrible consequences for the natural world. No creature should have to pay such a high price for our disregard. We are collectively responsible for the suffering of these remarkable creatures. We each have an albatross around our necks.
